Peter Plancius was a famous astronomer, cartographer, preacher and pioneer in the field of navigation at sea.

He drew more than 100 maps and arranged with his work that everyone arrived at the right destination. From 1552 to 1622 Peter explored the earth.

His favorite tool at sea was the sea astrolabe. An instrument with which he, with thanks the north pole star, could determine the geographic latitude.

His role as a central collection of information was of great significance for cartographers.

He was spiritual father of the Orbis Terrarum Typus De Integro Multis In Locis Emendatus; one the first complete world maps.
